Why Testing Matters
Home tests can be helpful, but they’re not foolproof. Testing too soon or not following the directions exactly can lead to a false negative or positive result. Our RNs use accurate, professional-grade tests to detect the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Timing Your Test
HCG begins building in your body after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, but it takes time for the hormone to reach detectable levels. The Mayo Clinic recommends waiting at least a day or two after your missed period before testing for the most dependable results.
Testing too early, even by just a couple of days, can lead to a false negative because hCG levels may still be too low to detect.
Additionally, testing first thing in the morning can improve accuracy, since your urine is typically more concentrated. If your initial test is negative but you continue to notice pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, or tender breasts, we encourage you to return for a repeat test after a few days.

A positive test is just the beginning. Only an ultrasound can show how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is developing normally, and confirm that it’s located in the uterus.
