What Is Abortion Pill Reversal?

Abortion pill reversal, often called APR, is a process that uses the hormone progesterone in an effort to counteract the first drug in a medical abortion, mifepristone.

Mifepristone works by blocking progesterone, which is essential for a pregnancy to grow. APR seeks to replace that hormone and support the pregnancy. The provider will administer doses of progesterone to outnumber and outcompete the effects of mifepristone. These doses can be provided orally, vaginally, or by injection.

The treatment is time-sensitive and has the best chance of success when started within 24 to 48 hours of taking mifepristone, though it may still be effective after that timeframe.

Once the second abortion drug, misoprostol, has been taken, reversal is no longer possible.

Safety and Effectiveness

Progesterone has been used for decades to help support healthy pregnancies and is not known to increase the risk of birth defects beyond the rate found in the general population.

Research and case reviews have shown promising results. According to one study, up to 68% of women successfully continue their pregnancies after starting the APR protocol.
