Learning About Abortion Procedures
Abortion ends a pregnancy either through a medical abortion (the abortion pill) or a surgical procedure. Each method has side effects and possible risks; understanding these ahead of time is an essential part of making an informed decision.
Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)
The abortion pill is a two-step process that is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy. The drugs work together to end and expel the pregnancy and cause bleeding and cramping.
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever or chills
- Headache
Possible risks to be aware of:
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Incomplete abortion (which may require surgical treatment)
- Infection
- Digestive issues such as severe nausea or diarrhea
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is done in a clinic or hospital setting, and the method can vary depending on how far along the pregnancy is. Cramping and light bleeding for a few days afterward is common.
Possible risks can include:
- Injury to the cervix
- Infection
- Scar tissue formation in the uterus which can affect fertility or cause painful periods
- Rarely, perforation of the uterus (when a surgical tool pokes a hole)
