How Abortion Works
There are two types of abortion.
Medical abortion, often called the “abortion pill,” uses two drugs to end a pregnancy.
Mifepristone is taken first to block the hormone that supports the pregnancy. Misoprostol follows, causing contractions that expel the pregnancy through the vagina. The FDA approves this method only through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Surgical abortion is used later in pregnancy. A doctor dilates the cervix and uses suction or instruments to remove the pregnancy and pregnancy tissue from the uterus.
Health Risks to Understand
Risks of medical abortion can include:
- An incomplete abortion that requires a follow-up surgical procedure
- An ongoing pregnancy if the medication does not work
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive discomfort
Risks of surgical abortion can include:
- Perforation of the uterus
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall, leading to future infertility
- Infection
Research published by the National Library of Medicine has also linked abortion with higher rates of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disturbance, and suicidal behaviors.
These mental health effects may not always appear right away. For some women, they surface months or even years later.
What Adoption Looks Like Today
Modern adoption gives birth mothers more voice and support than many women realize.
You choose the family that raises your child and the kind of relationship you want with them.
There are three types of adoption to consider:
Open adoption: You select the adoptive family and stay in regular contact through letters, calls, photos, and visits.
Semi-open adoption: You still help choose the family, but a third party manages communication and keeps your identifying information private.
Closed adoption: All identifying records are sealed, and there is no ongoing contact.
Also, in most adoptions, the adoptive family or agency covers prenatal care, delivery, and other pregnancy-related medical costs. Depending on your situation, additional help with rent, groceries, or other living expenses may also be available.
